The closure of the station responsible for the release of artists such as Miley Cirus, Hilary Duff and Selena Gomez covers both Disney Radio, with more than 20 years of existence, as well as Disney Country Radio, while the Latin American division will continue to issue as part of an independent contract.
The radio already represented an increasingly less relevant part of Disney's business, but the covid-19 pandemic and the crisis that originated in the entertainment industry eventually accelerated changes in the company.
Starting next year, children's content will be a priority in the company's latest bet on the paid subscription service of 'streaming' content, through the Disney+ platform, a competitor to Netflix and HBO.
"The difficult decision to shut down these two radio stations coincided with the structural changes recently announced by Disney, which require improved production of content for children and families at Disney+ and Disney Channel," the company said in a statement.
According to an estimate by variety magazine, the closure of Disney stations affects about 36 employees.
