The revised calendar, which was released on 12 January, shows the new calendar beginning in Bahrain on 28 March before moving to the Imola track in Italy on 18 April, with a race weekend “TBC” on 2 May before then travelling to the Barcelona track in Spain on 9 May.
According to the official Formula 1 website, “The TBC race in the calendar will be announced in due course and will take place on the new date of 2nd May”.
However, the proximity of Portimão to Spain and Italy and the previous holding of the event for the first time at the race track, has led many to speculate that a return to the Algarve could well be on the cards.
According to a report by Sky News: “Although May 2 is a ‘TBC’ on the calendar, Portugal’s Portimão circuit is expected to host the third race of the season. The Algarve track, like Imola, was another that was drafted in for the heavily-revised, European-centric 2020 season”.
At the time of going to press the Autódromo do Algarve had not made an official announcement.
