Firstly the 90/180 day rule is across the EU and not to a specific EU country. So if I travel by car through France and Spain to get to Portugal the time I spend in France and Spain forms part of the 90 days.
So where I have a concern is that I may have residency in Portugal where I stay for over 90 days and all is good but, when I return in the car through Spain and France they may well view me as having been in the EU for over 90 days and of course, when I get to the hard EU border at Calais how would they know when I entered and left Portugal and would they still include that time since Portugal is part of the EU.
This rule has been used for many years by non-EU residents so I would be interested to hear their experience of this.

If you are a resident of Portugal you are a resident of the EU and the 90 day rule does not apply, just carry your proof of residence with you, and if go to the UK being a resident of Portugal you are only allowed 180 days being a holder of a UK passport unless you become a resident of the UK again.

We have used the rule for the last few decades. Once you are in the EU it is not possible to be tracked by immigration but the rule still applies. We keep an in an out schedule and pay for almost everything by card as backup. No one has ever asked but still….Also, when entering on a residence card for any country until a year ago (no idea now) was not counted in the visa system. My wife once entered on just her passport and was indeed hauled up for overstaying but let off once she showed her card.

We wanted out for many reasons, and if 'the brits' did not come to portugal, they would loose a lot of money. Because if its one thing us 'brits' do is spend in bars, shops and restaurants, not sit all day with a bottle of water.

Just speaking from experience the last few months I've been traveling in and out of the eurozone, print out your resident certificate and the new updated one with QR code bring both... As all border agents coming into the Eurozone seen desperate to stamp your passport even though they are not allowed to if you are a resident of the EU. A lot seem to not to understand the requirements for European residents and European citizens, have even been told at the German boarder that I was no longer European and therefore had no more rights lol...
It's just lack of knowledge, and this will be sorted as soon as SEF issue the biometric residence card to UK pre-brexit citizens.
And J troll for view is not shared by 85% of the Portuguese population... Which is why your right wing party CHEGA will never gain any power.

So here we go. Vote 5 years ago to leave the EU. Sign an agreement setting out the rules of engagement with the EU, but then whine about the consequences. It's no different to going to Australia etc. just follow the rules. The English arrogance just shines through. We're British they need us. Where's my full English breakfast, my John Smith's bitter. Why do I have to wear a mask, I don't in England? If you don't want to follow the rules, stay in that country you think is so wonderful. After all you Brexiteers keep telling us you knew what you were voting for!
