In a press release sent to Lusa, the coordinator of ADACO - Associação Distrital dos Farmers of Coimbra, Ismênio Oliveira, states that, of the approximately 9,000 hectares of maize in Baixo Mondego, around 50 percent of the harvest is at risk of being lost, mainly between Coimbra and Carapinheira”.
ADACO calls for "urgent" intervention by the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out "an exhaustive survey of the affected area" and to offer "support measures for the affected farmers".
This situation occurs “due to the approach of a depression to mainland Portugal with an expression in altitude, to which are associated tropical air masses, unstable and with high water vapor contents”.
