The solemn commemorative session of the 25th of April 1974, includes speeches by deputies from the eight parties with parliamentary seats, in ascending order of representation, Livre, PAN, BE, PCP, Iniciativa Liberal, Chega, PSD and PS, by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, and by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
For the first time since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, the Carnation Revolution will be marked without a limited number of people present and also without the mandatory use of a mask in parliament - a rule that ceased to apply on Friday.
April 25 celebrates 48 years at a time of war in Ukraine, in which the invasion by the Russian Federation has lasted for two months, and the day after the re-election of Emmanuel Macron, liberal centrist, as President of France, in the second round of the French presidential elections, against Marine Le Pen, of the extreme right.
Following the January 30 elections, the Assembly of the Republic was reconfigured and now has an absolute majority of PS deputies, followed by the PSD and Chega as a third political force – a party that presented itself to the legislative with the motto "For a new democratic regime: God, country, family and work", recovering Salazar's slogans.
Open to the public
Today, from 3:00 pm, the parliament building will be open to the public, as well as the prime minister's official residence, in São Bento, from 2:30 pm, with circulation between the two spaces, where visitors will be able to enter until 18:00.
At the same time, the traditional parade will be taking place along Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon, promoted by more than 40 civil society, party and union organizations, including Associação 25 de Abril, PCP, PS, BE, PEV, CGTP and UGT and their youth structures and also the Free and Socialist Alternative Movement (MAS) parties.
The commission promoting this parade, scheduled for 15:00, asked the media to broadcast at 18:00 the song-symbol of the 25th of April "Grândola, Vila Morena" followed by the national anthem and to all who can singing these two songs at the windows and balconies, as in the previous two years of the pandemic.
The Liberal Initiative once again convened its own parade for 14:00, from Praça do Duque de Saldanha, towards Avenida da Liberdade, to which it announced that the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal will join.
In the gardens of Palacete de São Bento, the prime minister's official residence, the 25th of April will be celebrated with a cultural program for different ages, which includes dance, music and an exhibition of posters from the revolution and ends with a concert by Dino d'Santiago.
At the Palácio de São Bento, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, will be present to welcome the citizens from 15:00 and he invited everyone to visit the "house of democracy".
