The impact on tourism, resulting from the easing of restrictions due to the pandemic, is already starting to be felt with holiday reservations being made earlier and preferably in coastal areas, according to Airbnb.
The top destinations in Portugal for Airbnb guests is led by Comporta beach, in Alcácer do Sal, district of Setúbal, this is followed by more coastal locations such as Odeceixe (Faro) and Sines (Setúbal). In fourth place is Funchal (Madeira), followed by Olhos de Água (Faro), Carvoeiro (Faro), Alqueva (Évora), Odemira (Beja), Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Porches (Faro).
The regions of Santarém, Lisbon, Coimbra and Viana do Castelo are also in the ranking of the top 20 chosen for the summer.
Earlier bookings
Interestingly, the Portuguese are booking their getaways earlier than usual, according to the accommodation platform Airbnb. “Traditionally, the Portuguese have been among the last in Europe to book their holidays, but in the wake of the pandemic they are anticipating as much as their European neighbours”, says Mónica Casañas, director general of Airbnb Marketing Services SL.
But there are requirements to take into account when looking for a house on the platform, with having a swimming pool being “the most valued feature” that many guests cannot do without. Among other services requested are wireless Internet access, a kitchen, free parking and air conditioning.
