Classes start in the second week of September for the next two academic years, a decision which has been made bythe Government, which, for the first time, has presented a two-year school calendar.

Uncertainty when classes start was, for many families, a problem that the Ministry of Education has now tried to minimise by presenting a calendar for the next two school years.

"In order to provide more predictable work conditions for schools and families, this order is innovatively establishing a multi-annual school calendar, to be in force in the academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024", reads the order published in Diário da República.

For the next two years, classes in public schools start in the second week of September for all students, from pre-school to secondary school.

The school interruptions, during Christmas and Easter holidays, are again similar to the Covid-19 period, after two years of a pandemic that forced changes to the school calendar.

Next year, in schools where the three periods of classes still apply, the first period ends on December 16.

Classes then resume on January 3rand end on March 31. The third period starts for everyone on April 17, but its end varies depending on the student's academic year.

The first to finish classes will be the oldest ones who have national tests: For students in the 9th, 11th and 12th year, school ends on June 7.

A week later, on June 14, classes for students in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th grades end.

The youngest in preschool and elementary school, on the other hand, have school until June 30.
