According to CIVISA, the quake occurred at 09:00 local time (10:00 in Lisbon), with epicenter about three kilometres from Urzelina, in the municipality of Velas.

According to the information available so far, the earthquake was felt with maximum intensity III on the Modified Mercalli scale in Velas.

São Jorge island currently has an active volcanic alert level V3 (active system without imminent eruption), following the seismovulcanic crisis registered since 19 March.

The highest magnitude earthquake (3.8 on the Richter scale) of this crisis occurred on 29 March at 9:56 pm.
