According to the Climatological Bulletin of September 2022,
released by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA),
Greenland recorded in some places the highest temperatures ever for the month
of September.
Wet and warm
In Portugal, the month was classified as hot and rainy. The
average value of the average temperature was higher than the normal value (0.42
°C), and the average value of the minimum air temperature, 14.94 °C, was also
higher than the normal (+0.78 °C), being the fifth highest value since 2000.
As for precipitation, the IPMA says that the month was the
fourth wettest since 2000, with total precipitation, 66.5 mm, corresponding to
about 158% of the normal value.
The IPMA highlights the rain between the 12th and 15th, with
the average value of precipitation occurring on these four days corresponding
to 77% of the total value of the month. On these days, in some places in the
interior of the centre, the values of accumulated precipitation exceeded two
to three times the average value of the month.
For this reason, by the end of September, the drought
situation had subsided throughout the country. At the end of September 3.3% of
the continent was in mild drought, 64.3% in moderate drought, 32.2% in severe
drought and 0.2% in extreme drought.
In Europe the temperature was 0.4 °C lower than the average
value 1991-2020, especially due to below average temperatures in a region
stretching from central Europe to Finland and Russia. But in western Europe
temperatures were above average.
