According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), in
2021, 1,608,094 Portuguese resided in Portugal and lived in another country for
a continuous period of at least one year.
These former Portuguese emigrants returned mostly to the
interior of the northern and central regions and the Autonomous Region of
Madeira.
These are Portuguese who returned to their country of origin
after a period of emigration in France (23.2%), Angola (14.0%), Switzerland
(8.1%), Brazil (7.2%), Mozambique (6.5%) and Germany (6.3%).
