In a statement, the Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia
(SPP), one of the organisations involved, explains that they will have until
January 15, 2024, to gather the million signatures needed to “abolish the sale
of tobacco and nicotine products for the next generations”.
The project is led by the Spanish Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) Nofumadores and the ENSP (European Network for Smoking and
Tobacco Prevention), in collaboration with organisations from 15 European
countries, including the SPP.
The note explains that eight European citizens – including
the current coordinator of the SPP smoking commission, pulmonologist Sofia
Ravara – submitted the proposal to the European Commission (EC), which, “after
a preliminary technical-legal assessment, approved the launch of the
initiative, considering that it has powers and competences to legislate in this
area and that it is in accordance with the values and legal functioning of the
EU”.
For this, says the note, Nofumadores uses a participatory
democracy tool, launched by the Treaty of Lisbon in 2012 - the European
Citizens Initiative (ECI), which "is a unique way of contributing to the
definition of policies of the European Union asking the European Commission to
propose new laws”.
“Once one million signatures distributed in at least seven
EU countries have been reached, the European Commission is obliged to evaluate
the measures and decide whether they can enter the EU policy negotiation gear”,
writes the SPP.
In the statement, the SPP explains that the objective of
this ECI, dubbed Europe Without Tobacco, “is the progressive abolition of the
sale of tobacco and nicotine derivatives to citizens born from 1 January 2010”.
Quoted in the statement, Raquel Fernández Megina, president
of Nofumadores and organizer of the initiative in Spain, says: “By doing this,
we are declaring that the sovereignty of the EU rests on the shoulders of its
citizens and not on the lobbying capacity of the harmful tobacco industry.”.
The objective – defend the organizations – “is to save the
next generation from this pandemic totally created by the industry”.

The anti-tobacco hysteria is insane. Yes, cigarettes are fatal but fatty foods and excess sugar are far more dangerous than pipe and cigar smoking. Banning nicotine altogether is medieval.

Are the crime syndicates actively paying these busybody freaks or do they just reap the benefits?

Congrats to the people finally using common sense; aside from having a lit cigarette at a Lisbon nightclub lunged onto my face that burned on the dance floor from an uncontrollable dancer fact is if you eat dangerous amounts of sugar and fat, that's on you but if you smoke that affects me from dangerous second hand smoke; it's a proven fact of science. Fortunate for us these days not only is it easy to quit with the gum or a patch, but there are 3x as many non-smokers in the world and in Europe most will sign the petition and a good outcome will evolve for those of us that are not self-destructive and want to enjoy healthy lives that don't infringe on others; it's called "consideration and respect" for other people besides your addicted self.

Allan and Chico: Greece went all radical as well, and they still smoke a lot even compared to Portugal (source: “Smoking in Europe: which countries are the most and least addicted to tobacco and vaping?”, by Camille Bello, on 12/1/2023, Euro News) ; when the EU started that ridiculous campaign with photo montages of toddlers smoking with alarmist slogans, the smoking increased in youth,- repression leads to obsession, so good luck with that. I don´t see any serious scrutiny about Covid vaccines´ side effects, so they´ll have to come up with factors for whatever health issues arise in the populations from now on, and we all know the scapegoat won´t be alcohol.

I agree with Chico, in fact, it's not only insane, it's dangerous. Nobody forces people to smoke, they do it because they are free to do so. A government that decides whether people are allowed or forbidden to smoke a cigarette is not a government any sane person would want. It's a slippery slope.
Today it's tobacco, and tomorrow? What we eat? How much we eat? When we eat? What our children are allowed to eat? Governments have already far too much power. It's time for people to wake up.

Not smoking is a good thing, but it is yet another freedom of choice taken away if these people get away with it.
What will be the next thing?…
