Lisbon appears in 2nd place, but there are other Portuguese cities listed in the 2022 ranking.
According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), more than 10,500 events and congresses were held around the world, the analysis carried out in 2022 indicates that 85% took place in person (corresponding to 9,042), which, according to the CEO of the association, Senthil Gopinath, shows “an attempt to return to normality”, he said during the press conference held at IMEX 2023, in Frankfurt (Germany).
Portugal ranks 7th, with 294 face-to-face events/conferences held throughout 2022.
Ahead of Portugal are the USA (690 events/conferences), Spain (528), Italy (522), Germany (484), France (472) and the United Kingdom (449), respectively. Rounding out the Top 10 are the Netherlands (253), Belgium (234) and Canada (233), with El Salvador, Monaco and Oman closing the ranking with five events each throughout 2022.
In an analysis of the cities, Lisbon appears in 2nd place, only behind Vienna (Austria). While the Austrian capital hosted 162 events/congresses, Lisbon was the chosen city for 144 events/congresses throughout 2022.
The Top 10 ranking drawn up by the ICCA, with regard to cities, is also made up of Paris (134), Barcelona (133), Prague (129), Madrid (128), Berlin (113), Athens (109), Brussels (108) and London (106).
In this ranking of cities, other Portuguese cities also appear: Porto, in 27th place with 54 events/conferences; Cascais, in 129th place with 16 events/congresses; Braga, in 153rd position with 13 events/conferences; Coimbra, in 164th place with 12 events/congresses; Aveiro, in 173rd place with 11 events/congresses; Vilamoura/Algarve, in 256th place with 7 events/conferences; Guimarães, in 292nd position with 6 events/congresses; and Funchal/Madeira, in 326th place with 5 events/congresses organized in 2022.
In the European ranking, with the departure of the USA, Portugal rises to 6th place with 294 events and congresses held in the national territory.
