“The consumer confidence indicator increased in December, after having decreased in the previous four months”, says the statistics office. In December, consumer confidence was -26, compared to -30.8 recorded in November. However, despite the improvement, it is still at September levels, when it stood at -26.1.
This performance was driven by the contribution of “all components” analysed, according to a report by ECO. In this context, the statistics office highlights that expectations regarding “the future evolution of the country's economic situation increased significantly in December after having decreased between July and November” and that the prospects regarding the future evolution of the household's financial situation “also increased last month, following decreases seen between August and November.”
In turn, the balance of opinions on past price developments and perspectives on future price developments decreased last month.
It is not confidence in the future, but the holidays that made people consume more in December.
