"The Council of Ministers approved yesterday, electronically, the declaration of national mourning on January 31, 2024 for the death of Jacques Delors", reads a statement from the Government.

According to the Government, "Portugal and Spain jointly decided to declare national mourning, in order to coincide with the tribute event that will be organized that same day by the European Commission, in Brussels, and which will be attended by the Prime Minister".

Jacques Delors, a central figure in the construction of the European project and considered the "father of the euro", died on December 27, in Paris, aged 98.
