Miguel Pita was speaking to the Lusa agency regarding a visit that the party made to the Regional Civil Protection Service, in Funchal, following a tsunami simulation carried out earlier in the week.

In the opinion of the ADN candidate for the regional elections, “the lack of preparation” of Madeira “was evident in situations of this nature in terms of prevention”, highlighting the various constructions made next to rivers and “electricity production installations in areas at high risk of tsunamis”.

The head of the list proposed, as a way of guaranteeing electricity in the event of a catastrophe, “the acquisition of generators in slightly higher areas”.

In Porto Santo, for example, the food reserve is located next to the sea, as is the only water desalination unit, essential for the supply of drinking water, he highlighted.

Miguel Pita also mentioned that, in 2010, in the flood of February 20th, the mayor of Funchal was Miguel Albuquerque (PSD), and “the rivers were in that state for some reason”.

Sunday's legislative elections in Madeira take place with 14 candidates competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.
