This is an “innovative technique” applied for the first time in the cardiology service of the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS) and the two interventions performed so far were both performed “successfully and without complications” for the patients, the ULS assured.

“The Cardiology Service of the Algarve ULS has started an innovative technique for implanting electrodeless pacemakers. The intervention was performed on two patients and was successful and without complications”, reported the unit, which manages the hospitals of Faro, Portimão, and Lagos.

This procedure has “advantages” compared to the conventional pacemaker implantation technique, because it allows “preserving vascular access” and “implanting a pacemaker in patients without vascular access”, explained the Algarve Health Unit, citing the team that performed the intervention.

The new technique also allows “avoiding complications associated with the presence of intravascular and intracardiac electrodes and subcutaneous generators”, stated the ULS.

The team that implanted the pacemakers without electrodes was composed of doctors Hugo Costa, Pedro Carmo, and Rui Candeias, nurses Rosete Dias and Elisabete Landeira, and technicians Andreia Neves and Marta Arsénio, according to the Algarve Local Health Unit.

The team also had technical support from the company that supplied the equipment to perform the intervention, noted the ULS.
