The latest Vital Statistics – Monthly Data from INE present preliminary data on the number of live births and marriages up to July and deaths up to August this year that occurred throughout the country.

In July 2024, 7,110 babies were born alive and in June 6,695, while in July 2023 the number was 7,400.

During the first seven months of the year, the number of live births recorded (47,882) was 931 (-1.9%) lower than in the same period of 2023.

In terms of mortality, 9,124 deaths were recorded in August 2024, a lower figure than in July of this year (435 fewer deaths or -4.6%) and in August 2023 (468 fewer deaths or -4.9%).

According to the INE, the natural balance in July was minus 2,430, “worsening in relation to the same month of 2023, when it recorded a minus 1,324”.

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 fell in August to 133 (171 fewer, compared to July 2024), representing 1.5% of the total number of deaths.

In the first eight months of this year, 80,381 people died in Portugal, 1,349 more (+1.7%) than in the same period last year.

Taking into account the first seven months of 2024, the accumulated value of the natural balance was minus 23,193, worsening in relation to that observed in the same period of 2023 (-20,462).

As for marriages, in July their number (4,191) decreased by 9.3% in relation to the same month of 2023 but represented an increase of 5% compared to that of June 2024.

“In the first seven months of 2024, 19,009 marriages were celebrated, 534 fewer (-2.7%) than in the same period of 2023”, indicates the INE.
