In a statement, the municipality explains that hundreds of trees across Europe will now receive the Tree Tag, a sustainable label with information about their value.

This campaign is a collaboration between several organizations from nine European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain.

In Almada, 20 trees were chosen for their benefits to the community, today and in the future.

These trees, according to the City Council, are part of gardens and streets throughout the municipality and include the large cork oak in Parque da Paz, the large grevillea in the garden of the Almada Museum – Casa da Cidade or the century-old dragon tree in the Trafaria Prison.

In Portugal, 100 trees were selected from the municipalities of Lisbon, Almada, Cascais, Coimbra, Loulé, Vila Real and Santa Maria da Feira.

The labels placed provide information on the “services provided” by a specific tree: the amount of air pollution that the tree captures, the amount of oxygen it provides or the amount of rainwater it retains.

The #EUTreeTag campaign aims to draw the attention of as many people as possible to the added value of trees.
