Since the end of 2024, it has been developing a project in partnership with the Environmental Fund and the Portuguese Environment Agency, under a protocol signed between the three entities.

This project includes the implementation of teams and resources to detect and repair breaks in the distribution network, with financing from the Fund up to the amount of 85,000 euros.

The Mayor of Albufeira, José Carlos Rolo, stresses that “due to the drought situation in the Algarve, it was essential and urgent to seriously consider solutions aimed at mitigating the lack of water in the region”.

José Carlos Rolo states that “water losses represent a huge challenge for public water supply systems, compromising the environmental and financial sustainability of municipalities”. To solve the problem, the city government launched a public competition aimed at actively searching for leaks using geophones – highly sensitive and precise equipment.

The mayor highlights that “the adoption of these measures is a priority, since it contributes to reducing losses and improving water efficiency” in a predominantly touristic municipality, which in the summer “is faced with” an exponential increase in water consumption, and therefore has to take care to implement a reliable system with the least possible number of leaks.
