If you started off strong with learning Portuguese this year, now's the perfect time to make sure you keep the momentum going!
Learning a language is all about consistency. But how do you keep your motivation from dipping over the long term?
Setting personal mini-goals can give you a fresh focus each day or week, to keep you engaged and prevent your routine from getting stale.
This could be as simple as memorizing a certain number of words, or more practical, like completing real tasks in your daily life using the language.
Here are a few ideas to give you a boost:
- Go through your closet and name every clothing item in Portuguese, along with a word to describe it (camisa azul, sapatos novos, cinto feio, etc.). Look up the words you don't know.
- Post a daily social media update with 2 sentences about your day in Portuguese.
- List all the places you go on a regular basis. Write questions using words like Onde...?, Como...?, O que...?, Quando...? that you might ask at each location.
- Call a Portuguese business to book an appointment or ask about a product.
- Look at Portuguese restaurant menus online and read the descriptions. Make a list of all the dishes you'd like to try.
- Watch a Portuguese movie with subtitles, and then without subtitles.
Learning a language isn’t about perfection—it’s about showing up. Keep at it, and soon your progress will surprise you.
