For us it is essential to be able to launch a great national debate. The National Railway Plan will be law, it will be a document where we will be able to translate what is the railway network and the type of railway network we want for the country ”, said the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, who is being heard at the Assembly of the Republic. "[The plan] should be launched, hopefully, in April, because this is a process that will take a long time in national debate," he added.
Regarding the Railroad infrastructure investment plan 2020, for the modernization of the railway network, Pedro Nuno Santos guaranteed that it is “in full swing” and that there have been no further delays, and that the deadline that was projected should be concluded in 2023. “This is a great bet by our Government, we hope it continues to be, there is a very long delay on the national railroad that will need a commitment from years of different governments to be able to have a network that serves our country, the our territory ”, underlined Pedro Nuno Santos.
The plan includes the electrification of the entire railway line, which has not yet been completed, which will allow, said the government official, "a great environmental gain", since trains running on 'diesel' will no longer be needed. Pedro Nuno Santos also highlighted the purchase of new material from Spain's Renfe (51 new coaches for 1.5 million euros), as well as the reopening of CP workshops. “With the recovery of rolling stock and the strengthening of CP's workshop capacity, we were able to significantly reduce reductions,” he said.
