Tourist trips by residents in Portugal increased 83.9 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2020, but were still 35.4 percent below pre-pandemic levels, having been almost exclusively carried out in national territory (96.9 percent).
“In the second quarter of 2021, residents in Portugal carried out 3.6 million trips, which corresponded to an increase of 83.9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year (-57.6 percent in the first quarter of 2021), however, still below the values recorded in the second quarter of 2019 (-35.4 percent, when 5.6 million trips were made)”, said the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
By destination of travel, 96.9 percent took place in national territory, which corresponded to 3.5 million trips, more than 10 percentage points above the percentage recorded in the second quarter of 2019 (85.2 percent).
Conversely, trips to foreign destinations “reduced their expression”, being limited to 111.7 thousand (3.1 percent of the total; 14.8 percent in the second quarter of 2019).
