In a statement, the GNR Territorial Command of Setúbal indicated that the inspection took place in the protected area of the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina, within the scope of Operation “Verão Seguro 2021”, involving personnel from the Environmental Protection Center of Santiago do Cacém and the Sines Coastal Control Detachment.
The GNR explained that in this inspection, 15 offenses were detected and 15 people were identified for “the practice of camping and caravanning in an illegal or irregular situation” in the protected area, this offense being “punishable with a maximum fine of €4,000”.
Illegal or irregular camping and caravanning in a protected area, underlined the police, can lead to "an excessive and disorderly occupation of public spaces, coastal areas and classified areas" by motorhomes and the like, with "negative consequences on the landscape, the environment, the territorial planning and public health”.
The GNR stated that they will continue to “sensitise caravaners and campers to adopt more responsible and environmentally friendly behaviour, especially in these protected areas”.
