According to Ryanair: “This anti-competitive slot blocking has prevented Ryanair from obtaining sufficient slots (despite the assistance of the slot coordinator and the airport operator), for planned new route growth. TAP’s plan to cut its fleet by 20 percent means it simply cannot use all the slots it holds”.
The company believes that cancelled flights will damage Lisbon’s connectivity and post-Covid recovery and are asking for the Portuguese Government and the European Commission to now intervene to end TAP’s anti-competitive “slot blocking”.
“It is essential that Portugal’s critical national infrastructure is used to support the local economy and not abused to protect an inefficient zombie airline, which the Portuguese Government has already wasted €3 billion of taxpayers’ money on.
Ryanair has also stated that the company will keep all seven aircraft (a $700m investment) and crew in place in Lisbon this winter “to ensure it is ready and able to reinstate all flights if sufficient slots are freed up”.
Ryanair’s Group CEO, Michael O’Leary, said: “We deeply regret these unnecessary disruptions to passengers from these cancelled flights and routes caused by TAP’s blocking of slots which it is not using. This anti-competitive slot blocking obstructs the growth of airlines and the recovery of traffic, tourism and jobs at Lisbon Portela Airport, to the detriment of Portuguese consumers.
“Ryanair remains committed to working with our airport partner in Lisbon, to support Portugal’s tourism recovery and to rebuild connectivity after the Covid pandemic. We now call on the Portuguese Government and the European Commission to intervene to free up these unused slots at Lisbon Portela Airport and to urgently open Lisbon Montijo Airport.”
I am no fan on Ryanair's Michael O'leary, but he is right about TAP being a "Zombie" airline run by a Zombie management, bailed out by a Zombie government to the tune of €3 billion of taxpayers money!

If it is true which i much bought. Why should TAP be Governed by Ryanair who do the think they are. Nothing more than a miserable airline with a very poor record of over pricing and ripping people off

Like Greg, I am no fan of Ryanair, but TAP is the national airline and its record of customer service is abysmal. Take a look at TAP's Facebook page and try and find a word of praise. With so many efficient, more reliable and customer focused airlines available, why does Portugal with a population of only 10 million need a national airline?

TAP is Europe's worst airline; the government is pouring money into TAP which will only go to private pockets. Again, rampant corruption which has no end in Portugal. Little wonder that Portugal remains primitive and 80 years (if not more) behind the rest of EU. Portugal's only priority is to sell Golden Visas. Such a shame! (and no, being a small country is NO excuse - look at Holland and other small countries which thrive)

O'Leary is a pest and should go boil his head. TAP is not subject to his control, so he should hush up. Only those oprating TAP know for certain what plans are in the offing.

Let me, a Israeli tour guide in lovely Portugal defend TAP Airlines. I flew with TAP around 10 times and I always enjoyed the flight and the excellent service and crew.
Israel was not smart enough to keep our National carrier "EL AL" and I am sure it was a mistake to sell it to private hands.
Keep your TAP as a national carrier.

Ryanair hardly has the standing or credibility to criticize another airline. I may be in the minority, but I’ve flown TAP numerous times, including earlier this week from the US, and have never had a bad experience. I DEFINITELY can’t say the same about O’Leary’s crappy company.
