Re: English Language Channel

EDITOR, In response to Steve Smith’s letter in the Portugal News 15/1/22. I was shocked to read this mans very abrupt reply to Mr Ray Scott’s email.

I am in total agreement with Mr Scott in having an English speaking channel.

A lot of the Portuguese learn how to speak English by watching American movies, with Portuguese subtitles. As Mr Scott quite correctly pointed out, Portuguese language is way down the list of languages, were as English is the most spoken language all over the world.

No we don’t all live in caves Mr Smith not everyone has access to internet here in Portugal. We do have a very large ex-pat community here in Portugal, having an English weekly newspaper keeping us updated on both English and Portuguese news is interesting, and especially having the English TV guide on the channels.

Be as it may, in all these years being approached by Brits in Lisbon- been here from birth until 10, then from 1998 until now- only once did a Brit lady engage with me in Portuguese language. I was so happy I congratulated her and even bowed to her in deference.

It really is worth learning Portuguese. After all, it is the only official language in Portugal.
