According to data released today by the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition, of all the river basins, the most worrying situation is in the Guadiana (30%), Guadalete-Barbate (30% of total capacity) and Guadalquivir (28%).
The basins with the highest amount of stored water are those of the Basque Country (95%), those of the Eastern Cantabrian Region (86%) and those of Tinto, Odiel and Piedras (74%).
The situation of reserves in the river basins adjacent to Portugal, in rivers that in most cases flow into this country, varies from 53% in the Minho-Sil, 49% in the Douro, 46% in the Tejo to 30% in the Guadiana.
This situation in the reservoirs is added to the lack of rain, which in the first four months of this hydrological year - from October 2021 to September 2022 - resulted in a deficit of 35%.
According to the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), forecast models suggest that in the coming months there is a 50% probability that rainfall will be below average and only 20% that it will be above average, in a period of the year when it is usually the most intense rainfall recorded.
