Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the price of a basket of essential products has shot up by more than 22 euros, which represents an increase of 12.12%, reaching a total of 205.99 euros, according to accounts made by the Portuguese Association for Consumer Defense (Deco).

The Russian invasion of Ukraine further accelerated the rise in energy prices. This trend is already reflected in the inflation rate in Portugal, which, in April, stood at 7.2%, which represents the highest value in the last 29 years.

If on February 23, the day before the conflict erupted, the basket monitored by Deco cost 183.63 euros, on Wednesday it already cost 205.99 euros, which represents an increase of 12.12% (plus 22.36 euros). 63 essential food products have been assessed, which include turkey, chicken, hake, horse mackerel, onions, potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, oranges, rice, spaghetti, sugar, ham, milk, cheese and butter.

Among the products that registered the biggest price increase since the beginning of the war and until last Wednesday, Deco highlights “salmon (55% more), 100% vegetable cooking oil (50% more), fresh hake (up 47%), horse mackerel (up 30%), tomato (up 30%), chicken (up 28%), turkey steak (up 22% ), cake flour (22% more) and ground roasted coffee (17% more).
