The decision, announced by the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), resulted from a request from the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, "which raised the special alert status to the yellow level, following forecasts and meteorological data from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere" that point to high temperatures.
According to the note, the reinforcements will be placed in the districts of Beja, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Faro, Guarda, Portalegre, Santarém, Vila Real and Viseu.
MAI advises "all citizens to adapt their behaviour to the situation of rural fire danger, namely the adoption of the necessary preventive and precautionary measures".
It is completely unacceptable that people keep on setting fires in their gardens/plots of land when there is a high risk of these fires getting out of hand. It is often the case in the Algarve, regardless of high winds and dry conditions. People get what they ask for - these fires are not created by nature but by humans. Isn't it time that the population obeys and is educated to respect common sense?
