“Germany can count 100% on Portugal's commitment to the
construction of the gas pipeline. Today for natural gas, tomorrow for green
hydrogen”, wrote António Costa in a post on his official Twitter account.
According to the chief executive, until this pipeline is
completed, “the Port of Sines can be used as a logistics platform to accelerate
the distribution of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Europe”.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke out in favour of a
pipeline that transports gas from Portugal through Spain and France to the rest
of Europe, to reduce the current dependence on Russian gas.
In a press conference, Scholz regretted that this link had
not yet been built, because it would now make it possible to make a
"massive contribution" to the supply in northern Europe, due to the
energy crisis that arose after the war in Ukraine.
The chancellor, quoted by the Spanish agency Efe, added that
he spoke with his colleagues from Portugal, Spain and France and with the
president of the European Commission to promote this project, as the existence
of links with North Africa would help to diversify the supply.
This is awesome news! As long as it is coming from Germany and Russia as "No" part at all in it. This will provide many good paying jobs for Portugal and would hopefully reduce cost, too.

It is usually a wise economic policy to diversify, as much as possible, the kinds of resources that are made available to a nation or, in this case, an economical block of nations, such as how Western Europe now is.

The Germans will build it... Whatever that Portuguese prime minister says it merely smoke and mirrors. If Europeans are going to count on the Portuguese building it, they might as well count on the Tooth Fairy building it.

If the current lack of manpower in Portugal proves to be a problem, how about a special dispensation for Ukrainian labour. Motivation will not be a problem.

Portugal will build this pipeline, because it benefits all of Europe and everyone knows that we can't rely on Russian gas sources.

Hmmmm . . . think about it, you can send an LNG boat by sea directly to Germany, why would you build a 2300 km pipeline?
