The Confederation of Commerce and Services of Portugal (CCP)
has agreed to discuss with the Government the reduction of night hours in
stores on at least two days a week, within the scope of the Energy Savings Plan
that the government is expected to present at the end of August, reports Jornal
de Negócios.
On Thursday and Sunday nights, periods when sales tend to be
lower, shopping centre stores could potentially close earlier.
For the president of the CCP, “there should be no taboos” on
the topic of energy goals. However, the flexible position defended by João
Vieira Lopes contradicts the main associations on the side of shopping centre
owners and the large retail chains in Portugal, who fear that early closures of
establishments will translate into losses of millions, while ensuring that
there are more effective measures.
“The CCP is available to discuss more structural measures,
such as the reduction of extensive opening hours in commerce and services”,
said the confederation, in a statement quoted by the Lusa, noting that
“Portugal has a weekly average of operation much higher than European average”.
This position follows a request from the Energy Agency
(Adene) for contributions to the preparation of the Energy Savings Plan, which
should be known by the end of the month. “If the measures to be implemented in
the near future are not sufficient to fulfil the commitment made by Portugal,
this confederation is available to discuss other measures, such as the
reduction of opening hours (as has already been decided in other countries)”,
he stressed.
As measures to be adopted in the short term, the CCP
admitted controlling temperatures in commercial establishments or service
buildings and reducing night lighting (shop windows and public lighting), as is
being adopted in other European countries, but warned of the “need to ensure
enhanced security and policing”.
Many of these backwards corrective measures have proved to be ineffective.
Covid reduction policy, CO2 reduction, H2O conservation. Especially if you forget the root cause of the issue and leave the window open. Good luck with this one!

I agree, this is BS. Rather switch on the coal electrical plants, the nuclear plants switched off and generate cheap energy. We know that human activity on the planet only contributes 3% of the CO2 produced in the world!
Taken into account that the air we breath only contains 0.04% CO2, 78% nitrogen, and around 21% oxygen. why bother with CO2 taxes and fuzz!
Fact: Plants CANNOT live without CO2. It uses it as food with the sun and then produces ( the process of photosynthesis).... oxygen from CO2, which humans and animals cannot live without!
Moreover, talking about global warming, which is another BS idea. If both ICE caps melts of the world, the water levels WILL NOT rise!
Why? Simply science. When water freezes, it expands and when it melts it contracts. So polar caps melting will contract and the sea level will never ever rise!
So closing shops early will rather cause those shops to loose income and inconvenience people to shop when they want or need! It WILL NOT save energy!

The CCP - also known as the Chinese Communist Party. Sounds about right Lol
You really can't make this stuff up.

This sounds like a desperate measure, and won't save much if it's only a case of a few dozen malls closing for a couple of hours per week. The issue is not a lack of power, but the expense of supply it. A case of bean counters trying to save scrapings off the table.

NN, don't get me started on climate change politics and policy. Melting ice, as you said, does not increase the total water volume. The opposite is true for these bogus theories gaining momentum by fear mongering through (social) media. The climate is changing, yes. In fact the climate has been changing since day 1 if the Earth, not just the last 150 years.
But hey, who cares they say, it's a great way to squeeze even more money out of those silly sheeple. And airlines? Don't they inject co2 straight into the atmosphere? See how many are flying around on flight radar, it's nuts.
But now the cows must go, too much co2 from all that burping and darting. Anything that spreads fear is a great way to squeeze money out of society. That's why everyone feeds the ever so hungry money machine, those who don't are told they'd loose their rights, their lives. Which, and would they?
