“The North American market managed to reach a position never
reached in Porto and North. It is the third market in the region and has exchanged
places with Brazil”, said Luís Pedro Martins, the president of Turismo do Porto
e Norte from Portugal.
In an interview with Lusa regarding the balance of the
tourist summer in the North region of Portugal, the president of TPNP mentioned
that the Spanish market is in first place, secondly the French market, and in
third place is now the North American market, referring to the Brazilian market
to fifth place, with the German market in fourth.
The justification for the change in the ranking of tourist
markets in the Porto and North region relates to air connectivity through
United Airlines, the third largest airline in the US and in the world, said Luís
Pedro Martins.
The Brazilian market did not lose interest in the region,
but the lack of air connectivity caused a drop in the arrival of Brazilian
tourists, he adds.
“Not for lack of demand, but for lack of connectivity. (…)
We now have fewer flights than we had in the Brazilian market, we are at a
loss”.
British market
Luís Pedro Martins also highlighted the rise in the UK
market, as a result of the “good behaviour” of British Airways in the North
region.
British Airways had an operation “like never before and it
was immediately reflected in the numbers in the region”.
The president of TPNP stressed, however, that not everything
is going well.
“We have some dangers. Very imminent dangers. We have the
issue of war, for all the reasons, but also because it directly harms some
markets. The Polish market, the Czech market, the German market, because it is
close to the conflict and is a very important market for Porto and the North”, he
declared.
"Another problem that the region is facing is the lack of
qualified human resources, a problem that has been experienced in the past but
that has worsened with the pandemic and the crisis in the tourism sector,
leading to a loss of qualified people", explained Luís Pedro Martins.
Never. !!! God help Portugal. Give them a few week and they will want change with everything anywhere they put their grubby feet down to rest. !!!!! As it is not the same as wonderful USOFA!!!!!!!! THEY LEFT BEHIND..

I visited Portugal during Autumn of 2021 on a small group your as the country was beginning to open to visitors. Our Portuguese tour guide shared with us the mostly good but also had and ugly. I have been learning about the country for the past two years including its language.
I am refreshed and excited by its culture and landscapes. I adore the authentic hard working people of Portugal who remember what really matters in life.
However. I find the current state of the USA basically all of the opposite above. I fear for our democracy and safety of my immediate family and myself. All of our institutions are in collapse as supported by generally low rankings by all quality of life and standard of living measures.
I will be Porto and the North in early 2023 for 77 days to determine if I should move permanently to beautiful but not perfect Portugal. I like most Americans who move to Portugal love it as is. Why would we want to turn it into the country we left which is becoming more of an undeveloped and uncivilized country everyday? It greatly upsets me as some of my relatives have lived in the USA since the 1770s on the same farm.

Loss of qualified people? How about the total lack of incentives to actually work and to show up for work? The Algarve is notorious for people demanding to be paid in advance and then not bothering to show up to do the work. Never mind the complete lack of know-how and professionalism in many different fields. This is a disgrace and could easily be solved if people were trained and had been given a different set of work ethics instead of being lazy and valuing scams instead of work and professionalism.

Mike, you will love the North. I moved to Braga post early retirement this year and I don't regret one minute of it. The people are so friendly and welcoming like we used to be in the states when I grew up. Our country sadly treats tourists better than we treat our own. This country treats everyone like they are your neighbor.
