The creation of the list of “Treasures of European Film Culture” is an initiative of the European Film Academy with the aim of listing places and spaces that are symbolic for European cinema, “places of historical value that must be maintained and protected not only now but also for future generations”, reads the press release.

Ribeira do Porto is one of the 22 cinematographic treasures in Europe, with the European Film Academy recalling that this historic area was already the setting for three films by Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, specifically “Douro, Faina Fluvial” (1931), “Aniki Bobó” (1942) and “O Porto da Minha Infância” (2001).

Ribeira do Porto is the only Portuguese place on the list released by the European Film Academy, joining locations in France, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Latvia.

The aim of the academy is to annually add new locations to this list of “film treasures” and to introduce this heritage to new audiences.
