According to the BBC, the
turf-cutting debate springs from maintaining a balance between preserving the
environmental value of peatland versus its traditional use as a domestic fuel.
The ban also covers the sale of smoky coal and wet wood.

The Irish government has
introduced a ban on the sale of turf for use as fuel however, this has raised
concerns about an increase in illegal cutting north of the border.

I will miss the beautifully evocative smell - scent even, of burning turf and the heat it produced. Perhaps they will allow us burn it purely for recreational use ?
