Speaking at the closing of the XXIII Congress of the JS, in
which he was re-elected, Miguel Costa Matos said that legalising cannabis
"is not a divisive cause", but rather "a structuring cause in
public health".
"There are other [causes] in which we must take
advantage of this absolute majority of the Socialist Party to advance. And that
is, without a doubt, the case of the legalisation of cannabis", he said.
"Legalising cannabis is not a divisive cause, it is a
structural cause in public health, it is a need for us to control, regulate and
supervise the substance that is currently being sold on the streets. It is
legislating by evidence, it is following the examples of Canada, Uruguay, of
some states of the United States of America and it will be the case of Germany
and Malta", he added.
For Miguel Costa Matos, it is now necessary to sign "a
new social contract" with young people, "at a time when so many are
turning to the extreme right or liberalism".
"We need to demonstrate that it is here with the
socialists, it is here through the Welfare State, through equal opportunities
that we truly build freedom and fulfilment", he said.
For Miguel Costa Matos, "an absolutely central axis in this new social contract must be the fight against climate change".

Not certain that I like the line about the "Welfare State" but it's almost 2023 and clinically proven that Cannbis is far less destructive to our bodies than alcohol (liver) and also proven to erase some pain. I come from Seattle where "recreational has been legal for years, then moved to Miami where it's "Medical Marijuana" if you see a certified doctor first but will be on the ballot in 2024 and will pass for certain. No need to damage your lungs; it comes in drops, gummies, chocolate and other system deliveries and the state is making a fortune on sales; a "no brainer to make legitimate $ and put the dealers out of business like the ones at the bottom of Flowers Street in Porto and on Luis.... Barrio Alto. You've legalized all the other drugs, why not the least harmful?

It's about time honestly, there's been so much advancement already on cannabis, and it's also known that the harder you try to supress the more out of control it can get. Portugal already knows this from it's own drug decriminalization act back in 2000.
Even a country like Thailand, with such strict drug laws legalized cannabis. It's about time we take another look at these sectors and hopefully bring even more research to understand any potential harm it can bring.
By legalizing it we can conduct proper research and put proper control on these substances.

Portugal needs to be a forward leading country and legalize canabis which will help the economy too. It's a win win situation.

Typical of a Socialist to be in favour of such a degenerate policy. Easier to legalise everything than repress or punish wrongdoers. That cannabis is less bad than alcohol or murder is not a valid argument for legalising it. It still rots your brain, leads to dependency and heavy users aren't able to work or lead a meaningful life. I don't want millions more people depending on welfare because of their acquired addiction to cannabis, assisted by degenerate Socialist policy.
