Of the total number of foreigners living in Portugal, 44%
are between 25 and 44 years old, an age group that corresponds to 28% of
national residents. Of the immigrants in Portugal, 12% are between 30 and 34
years old.
Immigrants aged 65 or over make up 8%, in contrast to 25% of
Portuguese residents in this age group.
Women (51%) represent more than half of the resident foreign
population, although below the weight of Portuguese women (52.5%), according to
a study by Pordata.
The foreign population residing in Portugal is mostly from
Brazil (37%), followed by Angola (6%), Cape Verde (5%), the United Kingdom (5%), and
Ukraine (4%).
Brazilians were also the immigrant community that increased
the most in relative terms in the last 10 years (another nine percentage
points) followed by Nepal, India, Italy, and Bangladesh.
On the other hand, in the last decade, immigrants from Cape Verde, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, and Guinea-Bissau lost the most relative weight.
One of government's main goal should be to enhanced Portuguese university qualifications while attracting foreign human capital for lower qualified jobs.
