29 year old Ryyan Alshebl fled Syria in 2015 and was voted in with an absolute majority of 55.4 percent of the local vote. Alshebl described the election campaign as "overwhelmingly positive," the DPA news agency reported. Alshebl had been working for the local council in the nearby town of Althengstett after receiving his German citizenship.
Refugee becomes mayor
A Syrian refugee has been elected as the mayor of the German village of Ostelsheim.
