In one’s lifetime, there are pets, furry friends, beaked and feathered, or otherwise, that suddenly find themselves ‘homeless’. No choice. No consultation. ARA, the Animal Rescue Algarve, has many animals which have been successfully re-homed. They are a very happy team and ensure that whatever the reason, any animal in their care is treated with dignity and love. Some of which are victims of extreme cruelty.

‘Lucky’ an apartment cat, found its way to ARA’s shelter, via APAA, because her owner had unfortunately become very ill. Renamed ‘Monkey’, housed in a rabbit hutch due to her extreme shyness, gradually gaining the confidence she has become re-homed. Thanks to the ingenuity of João and his innovative team, all sorts of provisions can be made for animals. Sid Richardson ARA’s founder, had come up with a wonderful idea, which is now, as Sid puts it. “Work in progress. ‘Legacy’ is taking off, thankfully, the pet(s) involved are the winners!” Jenny, President of APAA and her colleague Anita had already tested the ‘Legacy for Pets’ scheme, some time ago. “What a relief!” Jenny is happy, but concerned. “There are animals, being put forward for re-homing because of the owner, becoming ill or untimely death.”

The family are naturally in a panic, grieving, as the case may be. “But the animal is our prime concern.” The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve’s Silves shop had a cry for help. “Margarida had heard that a woman became ill had gone into care. Her two 10-yr dogs need re-homing.” Sounds familiar. “They are sisters, so a home together would be wonderful.” But Jenny realistically points out. “Whatever, happens, a home is a home! Separately or together.” ARA’s João is also a realist. “We keep ‘family’ animals apart, they see each other, but they are encouraged to become independent. It makes re-homing a lot easier for them and us!”

The charity workers at APAA’s shops are not unused to the public, popping in and asking for advice. For which Jenny and her team are extremely grateful. Pet Park’s APAA lodger ‘Lilly’ is still looking for her forever home. Again, her owner, Joaquim is in care. She is a lovely, little dog. Loyal and affectionate as all the abandoned animals seem to be. A forever home is a dream for some. ARA and APAA always keep that in mind. Lisa Dowling APAA’s Facebook editor always on the lookout. “We keep on and on and on…” Lisa grins. “And on!”

Woof!
