This week the Food and Drug Administration in the US will review gene therapy for people with the inherited blood disorder.

If the treatment for sickle cell disease is approved it would be the first gene therapy in the US based on the CRISPR gene editing tool that earned its inventors the Nobel Prize in 2020.
