PSP police officers and GNR officers have been protesting across the country for more than two weeks, but today's demonstration, which takes place from 5:30pm between Largo do Carmo and the Assembly of the Republic, aims to have greater visibility.
According to the Police Union – made up of seven Public Security Police unions and four associations of the National Republican Guard and created to demand a review of remuneration supplements in the security forces – today's demonstration follows “the struggle for the dignity of the careers of the PSP and GNR, which unions and associations consider have been disregarded by the Government, with the 'final blow' being the secondary role of PSP and GNR in the attribution of the PJ's mission supplement”.
The president of the Police Professionals Union Association (ASPP/PSP), told Lusa that the demonstration will have a large turnout, of up to 10,000 officers, which will be “very demonstrative of the police officers' state of indignation”.
The president of the Association of Guard Professionals (APG/GNR) also told Lusa that “it will possibly be the biggest demonstration in terms of mobilization that has ever taken place”.
