According to We Fly Cheap, the beaches of the Algarve are Portugal's biggest attraction, but there is much more to experience in this region. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is also one of the attractions, being a true “home of plants and animals” and home to the “largest colony of seahorses in Europe”, according to the site.
Here is the top 10 according to the site:
1. Turkey
2. Greece
3. Tokyo, Japan
4. Italy
5. Cyprus
6. Mallorca, Spain
7. Algarve, Portugal
8. Mauritius
9. Romania
10. Netherlands
It is also suggested to take a boat trip to spot dolphins off the coast, as well as a walk along the cliffs to enjoy the “beautiful views” of the Algarve.
As a veteran in the travel industry, and having work hard to create sustainable tourism strategies for numerous destinations, I would not be proud of being in this list.
It means: you do volume, not quality; people do not spend, but overcrowd; local authorities are not left with enough to increase infrastructure, so tax residents more.
Local tourism and accommodation providers should increase their rate by 20%, the occupancy will drop, but the destination will benefit!
