According to provisional data released by the Algarve Hotels and Tourist Enterprises Association (AHETA), the month of March saw an overall drop of 3.4% compared to last year.
However, the average value is 0.2 p.p. (0.4%) above the occupancy observed in 2019, before tourist activity was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the summary of the monthly evolution of activity in the sector, the markets that recorded the highest annual growth were Canada, up 1.0 p.p., the Netherlands (+0.5 p.p.) and Germany (+0.4 p.p.).
The British market fell by 1.6 p.p. and the national market (1.4 p.p.) compared to the same period last year.
According to AHETA, the average stay in Algarve accommodation units was 4.3 nights, 0.4 p.p. more than that seen in the same month in 2024. In March, the longest average stays were in the Norwegian market, with 12.8 nights, followed by the Swedish (9.6 nights) and the Dutch (nine nights), concludes the business association.
Portugal Tourism needs to reinvent itself (look at the TV Adverts in the U.K. for Turkey holidays). What was once viewed as cute and rustic in the Algarve once upon a time is now dilapidated and covered in Graffiti.
