Marking International Civil Protection Day, which is celebrated on March 1st, the Lisbon City Council (CML) will promote at 9:30am, in the Town Hall, an action to raise awareness among the population about the risk of tsunami, directed to the parishes of Santa Maria Maior and Misericórdia.
This action will include a public presentation session of the Tsunami Warning and Alert System in the Tagus Estuary, with the presence of the Civil Protection councilor, Ângelo Pereira (PSD).
“An evacuation exercise will follow, with the activation of a sound signal (siren), scheduled to start at 11:30 and the emission of sound signals from the tsunami warning and alert system for around 10 minutes”, he said.
The Tsunami Warning and Alert System in the Tagus Estuary was initially installed in Praça do Império, in Belém, where two exercises have already been carried out to test the degree of readiness, with the activation of the siren, in November 2022 and in November 2023.
Continuing the implementation of this system on the riverfront of the city of Lisbon, which is exposed to the risk of tsunami, CML has now completed the implementation in Ribeira das Naus, between Cais do Sodré and Praça do Comércio, which covers the parishes of Saint Mary Major and Mercy.
On November 26, 2022, CML presented the Tsunami Warning and Alert System in the Tagus Estuary, with the installation of sirens in Praça do Império and Ribeira das Naus and the definition of evacuation routes.
This is a fantastic idea since there are so many new people constantly coming to Portugal. I met a lady in Cascais that asked what that odd sound was she heard. I told her that’s a tsunami warning. They were test ours in Cascais. This lady has been here two years. So testing isn’t done that often.
