The “Ovar em Jazz” festival, which counts the piano as a common element in six of the concerts, is back in town between the 17 April and the 20 April. The festival will take place in the Ovar Arts Center and the School of Arts and Crafts and has a mix of free and paid single concerts which can cost up to €10, as well as a general pass option available for the four days which cost €25.
The goal of the festival, according to the municipality's mayor, Domingos Silva, is to provide diverse opportunities for audiences to appreciate jazz, a sort of music that works well in both formal and more casual settings. As he mentions “'Ovar em Jazz' is a consolidated commitment by the Municipality and is already one of the national stages of excellence for this musical genre and one of the few outside large urban centres”.
“As a result of our investment in a program with renowned artists at national and international levels, public participation has been increasing, but it is our objective to continue to grow and reach new spectators, maintaining the sharing aspect of the event, with informal initiatives such as the free concerts and the experimentation workshop”, Domingos explains. Therefore, the 2024 programme primarily consists of artists from Portugal, Brazil, and Spain. The Mário Costa Quarteto will perform at the festival's opening event on 17 April, which the organisers describe as a "luxury international cast."
On 18 April, the Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble (LUME), a project founded and led by pianist Marco Barroso, is the main attraction, where fifteen jazz and classical musicians will perform live. For the next day – 19 April - the Spanish musician Abe Rábade is going to be in the spotlight with his album "Botánica" which was influenced by excursions through forests during the COVID-19 period of confinement.
