This sector's turnover grew in all geographic areas of the country, with emphasis on the Autonomous Regions of the Azores (+26.2%) and Madeira (+23.2%), as well as the areas of Lisbon (+24.2%) 4%) and North (+24.2%).
The data analysed by Informa D&B includes hotels, local accommodation units, aparthotels, tourist apartments, rural tourism and housing establishments, tourist villages, and guesthouses.
The number of guests, in turn, reached around 30 million, which represented a growth of 13% compared to the previous year.
Overnight stays totalled around 77.2 million, 11% more year-on-year, with overnight stays for residents in Portugal rising 2.1%, to 23.4 million, and overnight stays for residents abroad growing 14.9%, reaching almost 54 million.
The British remained the largest number of foreign customers, representing 12.8% of total overnight stays, ahead of the Germans (7.9%) and the Spanish (7.1%).
The available hotel capacity in Portugal recorded "significant growth" in 2021 and 2022, says the study.
The total number of beds available in December 2022 was around 458 thousand, 13.1% more than in the previous year, while the number of establishments in operation increased by 13.1% compared to 2021, approaching 7,100.
