Pedro Lencart cemented a double with a win in the Pro-Am, one day after having triumphed in the individual tournament of the 5th edition of the PGA Players Championship, a tournament with 10 thousand euros in monetary prizes, which the PGA of Portugal organised at the Oporto Golf Club, in Espinho.

The 24-year-old Portuguese led the team that included amateurs Tiago Violas Ferreira, Hélder Lopes, and Mário Jorge Oliveira Reis, with a total of 84 points.

A victory by 3 points, given that the 2nd place, led by one of the best Portuguese professionals of all time, Ricardo Santos, scored 81 points. Luís Montenegro, Manuel Oliveira Violas, and Manuel Silva Carvalho (respectively captain, former president, and president of Oporto Golf Club) were the amateurs who partnered with Ricardo Santos, the current national champion.

There was also a prize for the 3rd place, with 79 points, from the newly professional Hugo Camelo and the amateurs Arsénio Almeida, Armando Rocha and Mário Abrantes.

The Pro-Am also awarded Elza Oliveira for the longest women's drive, Hélder Lopes for the longest men's drive, and José Granja for closest to the hole.

“Consistent”

“The tournament went quite well in both rounds. I felt my game was consistent, on the approach to the green, around the green, on the putt, and then, winning today's Pro-Am with the three amateurs, was the icing on the cake”, said Pedro Lencart.

The former two-time national champion of 2021 and 2022 won the event reserved for high-performance professionals and amateurs, with 132 strokes, 10 under par, after two consecutive rounds of 66, receiving a prize of 1,800 euros.

Pedro Lencart beat Pedro Almeida by 4 strokes, who totalled 132 (67 and 69), -6, pocketing a prize of 1,400 euros.

“The Oporto Golf Club is a course where I've played many times, I'm from near here, raised in Miramar. I've always felt very comfortable, since I was under 12. It's true that the first time I was a national amateur champion was here, in 2016, eight years ago and I had very special moments here. I knew that, on this course, I would have a good chance in this tournament. It's my first victory this year, which gives me more confidence because now I'm going to start my season on the Challenge Tour (second European division).

The V PGA Players Championship is one of the most important events on the Portuguese professional circuit, it counts towards the ranking of professionals of the Portuguese Golf Federation, and Rui Morris, the president of the PGA of Portugal, was satisfied with the event.

“This was the most important tournament of the year for our association of Portuguese professionals. It was held here, at the Oporto Golf Club, a club that has many tricks in professional golf. And we are grateful for the important sponsorship of Solverde, which has continued with the PGA of Portugal for many years”, said the president.

“It was equally important to have strong support from our associates. Almost all the great national players were here, the only one missing was Ricardo Melo Gouveia for personal reasons. But we had Ricardo Santos and Pedro Figueiredo from the DP World Tour, Tomás Melo Gouveia from the Challenge Tour, and other players from international circuits,” added Rui Morris.
