When it works correctly, it is able to identify and eliminate these threats, protecting us from diseases. But as effective as it is, it's not always perfect. It can become hyperactive, causing allergies or asthma, or attack the body itself, causing autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes, among others.

There are a series of factors, genetic or external, that can weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable. It is important to be aware and know how to identify the possible signs of a weakened immune system.

Check out some of these situations, but above all, see your doctor so he can clarify it for you.

Recurrent infections. If you need to take antibiotics more than twice a year, it may be a sign of a weakened immune system. It is also important to take into account that antibiotics should only be taken when prescribed by a doctor.

Frequent trips to the bathroom. 70 percent of the immune system is located in the digestive system. For example, people with diarrhoea lasting more than two weeks, without evidence of an infection such as gastroenteritis, may indicate that their immune system is altered.

Constant fatigue. The feeling of tiredness can be associated with problems with the immune system, especially when, despite sleeping well, we still feel exhausted. This symptom of extreme fatigue is due to a mechanism that tries to conserve energy to “feed” our defences when they need to fight microbes.

Difficulty healing wounds. When we cut or burn ourselves, the skin goes into action to control the damage, protecting the injury and regenerating the wound. This healing process has a relationship with the immune system, and when our defences are healthy, this entire process occurs as it is supposed to. On the other hand, if there is a problem with the immune system, different skin injuries may take longer to heal.

Very sensitised skin. The skin is the body's first line of defence against infections. If your skin is dry or red and you have an itchy sensation, it could be a sign that your immune system is fighting an infection or other condition. Painful or persistent rashes can also be a sign of a weakened immune system.

Adopting a lifestyle that promotes health - including that of the immune system - is important for everyone. These are some strategies that you can implement in your daily life:

  • Manage stress well - for example, practice yoga, meditate, have massages, have hobbies, and keep in touch with friends and family or other people who constitute a good support network.
  • Adopt a healthy, varied, and balanced diet.
  • Maintain an adequate weight.
  • Get quality sleep and adequate quantity. Sleeping too little harms the normal production of white blood cells, which play a very important role in the immune system.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Do not smoke.

  • Keep your vaccinations up to date - vaccines prepare your immune system to fight infections before they take hold in your body.
