"It is with great pride that I speak to you in Portuguese", declared Luís Montenegro, at the end of his speech in the general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), in New York.
The head of the PSD/CDS-PP Government mentioned that Portuguese is "the fourth most spoken language in the world as a mother tongue, today uniting more than 260 million people on all continents".
"Portuguese is an official and working language in 33 international organisations, including the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP)," he added.
The Prime Minister argued that "this community's ambition to see Portuguese recognised as an official language of the United Nations is therefore legitimate."
