The Public Security Police indicates that in March it registered 4,862 speeding drivers, 2,536 more than in the same month last year, which is equivalent to an increase of more than double.

“These figures, from a preventive perspective, are of particular concern to the PSP, as speeding continues to be a major factor in all road traffic offences recorded and is one of the main factors in road accidents”, highlights this security force.

The PSP also says that in March it inspected 68,337 drivers (7,146 more than in 2024) and controlled 231,340 vehicles by radar (20,964 more than in 2024), having registered a total of 23,115 infractions, which is equivalent to an average of around 746 infractions per day, corresponding to an increase in the number of infractions of around 48%, compared to the same month last year.

This security force also carried out, in March, 18,736 alcohol tests, which resulted in 460 fines for drunk driving, 106 of which were for drivers who had held their license for less than three years or were professional drivers.

The PSP also highlights the 510 infractions for using a mobile phone (89 more than in the same month in 2024), which means that, per day, more than 16 drivers were found driving while using a mobile phone.

In the third month of the year, the PSP arrested 891 drivers for road crimes, namely 505 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 386 for driving without a legal license, representing an increase of around 75% compared to the arrest records for the same period in 2024.

Road accident data for March show an increase in the number of accidents (+138) and minor injuries, while the number of serious injuries (-17) and fatalities (-2) decreased.

In March, the PSP registered 4,792 accidents in its area of ​​responsibility that caused five deaths, 38 serious injuries and 1,421 minor injuries.
