By investing 1.2 million euros, the ‘Centro Social e Paroquial dos Pousos’ (CSPP) in Leiria will renovate and enlarge its children's daycare centre, enabling it to double the number of children it can accommodate. According to Lúcio Roda, the head of the CSPP, 364 thousand euros will be made available from the Recovery and Resilience Programme (PRR).
Established in 1981 as a private social solidarity institution (IPSS) the ‘Centro Social Paroquial dos Pousos’ can accommodate children between the ages 0 and 5. According to Lúcio Roda, “We will provide bank credit and the municipality (Leiria) has committed to also providing support, with financing, the value of which we do not yet know, but the commitment is to be in line with what has been the contribution to other institutions”.
The project intends to increase the offerings and renovate the children's centre, which is housed in a structure that is already more than 40 years old. The building will be expanded and renovated on its own land, which the Leiria City Council has given to the organisation in due time. Additionally, Lúcio Roda has shared that the project should start in January 2025 and be finished by the end of that year, with an estimated completion period of 11 months.
With this expansion the nursery will have an additional 60 places, for a total of 122, however, according to Lúcio Roda, that figure will still not be enough to accommodate the 80 children on the waiting list. There will also be a minor adjustment in preschool with the requalification of the classrooms, increasing the existing capacity of 73 pupils to 75. Therefore, in addition to adding more rooms, the intervention will also renovate existing ones and make adjustments to the cafeteria, common areas, and restrooms to accommodate the increased number of pupils.
