The launch of the public tender for the contract to build the circuit to be accessible to people with disabilities was approved at a meeting of the city council executive.
The accessible tourist circuit, which covers Vila Adentro and Largo D. Afonso III, “aims to enhance the full enjoyment of the historic space and its points of interest, regardless of the physical and sensory capabilities” of those who visit that tourist area of the city.
According to the city hall, the work will create conditions of accessibility and mobility for everyone, connecting equipment and points of interest and improving the quality of public space.
At the same time, conditions will be created for leisure, recreational and cultural activities, through the installation of urban furniture and adaptation of infrastructure, which will be in full articulation with the neighbouring buildings, says the city hall.
The work has a base value of €1,149,530.06, plus Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (IVA) and an execution period of 540 days.
According to the Algarve municipality, the assignment of the intervention will be conditional on obtaining a visa from the Court of Auditors.
This is welcome.
As populations age, this investment will be repaid many times over.
The main issue will be making sure that overtourism does not make this project a victim of its own success.
